Continued from Part 2
By Friday, even after the lay day on Thursday, we were spent and ready to head home. Of course there is the matter of nearly a thousand miles between us and home so as the saying goes, if you want to eat an elephant, go one bite at a time.
Just as we had done with the drive down, we gauged each day so that day 1 was the longest with each following drive day shorter. We left reasonably early with our first stop set to be at Herd it Here alpaca farm in South Carolina. What an awesome spot it was with a patient farmer showing Ryder the ropes and getting him involved right from our arrival and later having us head over to feed the baby goats while he was out at dinner with his wife. These are truly the experiences that we travel for.
We hit the road yet again bound for North Carolina where we would finally get to an adult approved destination… a distillery along the shores of the Roanoke River. Our hosts were welcoming and as other RVers arrived, I got a fire pit going behind the distillery so we could share travel stories and sip bourbon as the kids made friends playing ball with the dogs and stayed up past their bedtimes.
Needless to say, we were all a little slow the next morning before our last leg back to Annapolis. After we backed Talley into her spot and collapsed into the couch cushions, we couldn’t help but reflect on how much fun we had but how quickly it all went… a thought that resonates with life with kids. They grow so fast and I can only hope that some of these moments stick with them through life.
