This all started over the winter when Lois wanted to put electric winches on Backfin. My time has been extremely limited, and I waved my white flag that I would not be able to complete the install in a timely manner, so she had Ted her usual guy perform the install (which cost as much as the winches themselves… ouch!).
Once the season started to roll around, we knew we have a few last minute things to do to get the winches online. Ted had told us the old battery bank was not sufficient and needed to be replaced. So back in April I acquired the batteries and got them installed after a lengthy research process to make sure I was getting the right replacements or Backfin. What Ted didn’t tell us was that he hadn’t bother to perform the final wiring because of this. Additionally, the wiring on the boat was a mile off from what it should be (remember, I work for ABYC and know a thing or two about how the wiring should be).
Now comes the nerd… I went ahead and got the final wiring done so the winches would be operational this summer, but I also completely mapped out the wiring as it currently is (incorrectly as it may be) and also drew up new wiring diagrams for what it should be. Over the next couple months, I’ll tear the wiring out and get it up to the standards and give us some much needed piece of mind when using the boat all the while protecting our investment.
