Tom’s Ride

Our nephew Tom has been staying with us the last couple months to get a foothold on starting a new life. He wants to go to college and carve his own path, but we all know that it takes a village. Part of the evolution he is undertaking with moving here is the acceptance that a car is a necessity in modern life and that was no longer something that could be postponed.

With a modest savings and a small loan to make up the rest, we looked at well over 20 different cars in person and countless others online. Tom learned some of the pitfalls of buying a car as well as some new terms such as “bait and switch”.

10/21 marked the day he overcame all the obstacles and became a new man with the freedom of his own transportation. He anxiously signed the documents like someone eating Thai for the first time, waiting for the kick… but finding a great satisfaction in embarking on a new challenge. He drove home cautiously behind me and I could see the roller coaster of pride, happiness, and nerves all coursing through the expression on his face (all perfectly healthy). Once home, he oozed over his new wheels like molten fudge out of a freshly baked lava cake. He beamed with pride, pushing buttons and exploring its features.

We’re proud of you Tom, Congratulations!
