Time away… (Updated)

…is seldom rewarded without cost. Murphy’s Law doesn’t take a vacation from litigating against us apparently and we did not escape our trip to California unscathed.

  • The day we arrived at mom and dad’s house in Morro Bay, the air conditioner in the new house died. Our dog sitting service discovered it easily as the temps in the house went up with each visit that first day. While this event sucks, two things made the failure bearable: we have a home warranty which should cover the potentially high repair fees and the temps in Annapolis are unseasonably low while we were away.
  • Because of the above, we chose to put the dogs in the basement during the day. The basement had not been extensively prepared for canine habitation and thus the highly anxious foursome ate or chewed up anything they could get their paws on including, beds, bags, toys, baby food, snacks (left in my work bag) and even a bag of flour. Intestinal ramifications soon followed each event and we are waiting to see what additional bills appear from our patient dog sitting service who did the best she could.
  • The job that EDPi was hired to complete in Marina Del Ray is one we have done twice a year (one east coast/one west coast) for many years. We arrived and had everything ready to go, but our normal event manager was MIA. As we nervously approached the event start time, we learned that she was sick… big time. The on site coordinators of the event hardly knew any of the plans and layout, so Kris (having done the job more times than even the Northrop Grumman employees) took over getting the front end together for the event in addition to her usual long list of responsibilities at those types of events. Stress level: 11.
  • The printer boxes were completely destroyed in the shipping process. We were lucky to have a few working printers at the job, but then needed to construct new boxes using whatever materials we had plus overly priced cardboard boxes from the UPS Store. This was not the best use of time considering all the other things happening.

So much for a relaxing few days away without thinking about “reality”.

UPDATE: 8/22/17

The warranty company has a process they like to use to get these types of issues resolved. We were approved to have a replacement unit (yes, the whole thing) installed. However the bureaucracy of the company has made the process of replacement akin to swimming backstroke across the pacific. Tomorrow makes 3 full weeks without air conditioning. Supposedly, our claim has been issued a PO and sent to a distributor. Maybe if we are lucky, we’ll have AC by the then of the month. Then again, this is a Murphy’s law post.

It has been a struggle to keep the house hospitable in the East Coast August air despite the lower than average temps for this time of year. The household humidity is taking its toll on the psyche as well as the house itself (the plaster does not like high humidity).
