Spring Break 2021! – Part 1

At long last, we broke away for some down time. I took the first week of April off during Ryder’s spring break from school and we hitched up for our longest trip yet on board Talley. We left on Sunday which yes, cost a couple valuable days of vacation time, however there was virtually no traffic on the road and that’s typically when people are check out of campgrounds instead of in. It also meant that I wasn’t rushing to get out of work on Friday to pack the last few items and hitch up the rig.

Our first stop was Williamsburg Virginia to see some of the local sights. As the crow flies, we weren’t that far from where we were a week before but this campground was right in the heart of the attractions. While this made it appealing in that respect, it was not our style of campground in the least. The sites were small, roads were narrow and most of the amenities were poor.

That said, on day one we only had an 8 mile drive to go to Busch Gardens where Ryder experienced his first roller coasters. The first one that he rode with Kris was great… a classic wooden style coaster from which he returned with all smiles. The next one… well this one was a little over his head and scared the S#*t right out of him. Parents of the year nominations: reduce your 6 yo to tears doing something that should be fun. We managed to turn him around pretty quickly with ice cream and thankfully he didn’t dwell on it.

Our Day 2 destination was even closer to the campground at around 4 miles from Colonial Williamsburg. It was an absolutely marquee spring day while we strolled under the tree blossoms and marveled at America’s living history lesson. The grasses were lush green, flowers blossoming in the gardens, squirrels chasing each other all with a gentle breeze swaying the porch swings hanging from historical homes along the cobble road. Ethan is heavily on the move and here was his opportunity to roam without fear of hazards other than the occasional horse drawn carriage.
