Viking / SAMS

I get to see some neat places and meet some interesting people in the boating industry. My latest installment of boating industry adventure is a trip to Nowheresville, New Jersey. The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors  (SAMS) sometimes asks us to speak at various meeting and they wanted an ABYC presence during a regional conference. So in lieu of another boring standards update presentation,  we did standards gone wild where we display some of the things that go wrong when the standards aren’t followed. It was the first time Brian and i did the presentation without the aid of John or Ed, so we were up late tidying up the wiring and working the kinks out of our routine.
The conference was being held at Viking Yachts where ABYC has a great support and a few friends willing to give us a behind the scenes tour. Pat Armano spent a couple hours with us climbing through numerous boat at various stage of construction and displaying the many workshops, wood and machine with a range of low tech and extremely high tech equipment including a giant 5 axis router.
Boat construction is fascinating and done at this level it is awe inspiring when the scale of 92 foot boats is calculated in.
