Mid-Summer Night’s Week

The Mid-Atlantic in late July and August can be demoralizing because of the stagnant air, high humidity and oppressive heat. So we wanted to get away and finally found a good excuse to go back to West Virginia for a few days and it paid off since we found massive relief from the heat. I’d say the only drawback was that it rained nearly every day but at least we were able to spend some time in the outdoors. The Yates joined us again for our week long excursion so we had some built in companions for doing stuff around the campground and exploration.

We divided the week between two different locations, both of which were great. The first was an area we’re pretty familiar with just outside Davis where we have been many times in the winter and even a summer vaca many years back. We camped at Blackwater Falls State Park which had trails right from the campground and the falls were only a short drive down the road (The Yates did walk from the campground… it would have been a bit much for us with the kids). Ryder and I rode our bikes and even got in a real mountain bike ride. Later I chose a cool morning to disappear for a few hours to ride a soggy trail that was quite spicy in how challenging it was.

Our next stop was a mere 45 minute drive away at Robert W. Craig Corps of Engineers Campground. It was a tad challenging getting the rig through the winding roads, but the campground was a great example of why we like COE campgrounds. It was well thought out, spacious and extremely well kept… not to mention cheap at $22 a night! Add into the equation that they held an emergency responders meetup on Saturday morning and we were ecstatic. The boys got to explore all natures of big emergency trucks and bounce in a giant bounce house for a couple hours.

The morning we left for home, it was a hair under 60 degrees when we woke and 95 when we got home. To say that we timed things right would be an understatement.
